What is a Section Reader?

A Section Reader is one of the most important roles at Crook & Folly. As a Section Reader, you will read all submissions to your assigned genre (Fiction, Poetry, etc.). Then you will vote on your favorite pieces in an effort to choose the final selection for publication.

Yes you! You are the voices that choose who and what gets included in the magazine.

We are looking for students of all majors to apply and help us curate the 46th edition of Crook & Folly. All we ask is that you love to read, have an eye for great writing and want to be involved at Crook & Folly!

Administrative Staff Duties and Responsibilities:

Section Editors

As a Section Editor, your job will be to manage submissions to your assigned genre throughout the submission period (Jan. 13th to Feb. 23rd). Your team will be composed of 4-8 Section Readers who will read and rank all the submissions for publication eligibility.

Your duties will include organizing submissions and managing your Section Readers to keep to schedule which requires comprehensive reading and writing skills. The most important role of Section Editor is sending feedback to the writers who choose to submit during our Incentive Period*. This requires professional writing abilities as well as an enthusiasm for improvement of the submitted pieces.

*Incentive Period

(Jan. 13th to Feb. 2nd.) – The Incentive Period allows for writers to submit their pieces for the chance to get customized feedback from the genre(s) they submit to. After teams evaluate pieces, the Section Editor will compose an email (sent by the Editors in Chief) to suggest changes, or opportunities for improvement.

Social Media

For our Social Media Team we are looking for individuals looking to create content for our different social media channels. Our main channels are Instagram and Twitter, however, we have under utilized accounts on different platforms.

As a Social Media Team member, you will work under Editor in Chief Amanda to help create, schedule and post media content. Typically we will post once a week, or more, depending on the time of year.

Copy Editors

Copy Editors are the most important team members for final edits. You will help to read through final selected submissions and edit them for grammar and spelling mistakes. This is crucial for our selected pieces before they get sent to the Art Team for publication.

We are looking for motivated individuals with a knack for catching grammar and spelling mistakes. Your job will pick up in 2026, however, we will reach out for proof-reads of emails, social media posts, and potentially more.
